Hand Cabin Luggage Size

Updated on September 28, 2010

Cabin luggage size is confusing for many travellers. A few urban myths abound regarding the size of hand luggage and the specifics appear to fox many an intrepid frequent flyer. On top of that, the extra costs of booking hold luggage aboard a flight can make the difference between a cheap flight and an expensive one.

Cabin Luggage Size

Cabin luggage size is as follows: 56cm long, 25 cm deep and 45cm wide. That’s just over 22 inches long (roughly a little less than two feet), by 9.8 inches deep and 17.17 inches wide. These sizes differ slightly with US air companies and it’s best to check with individual carriers/flight providers.

Not very big? I guess not. But it is adequate for a short trip or even a week, if you pack wisely. It’s about the size of a large holdall, or duffel bag. Personally I use the cabin bag type – I like my belongings protected by something a little stronger than nylon.

Also, bear in mind the above dimensions include wheels, handles and exterior pockets. The best (and easiest) way to get your hands on the right size is simply to buy yourself a piece of dedicated hand luggage.

Hand Luggage

Cabin Luggage

There is some great hand luggage on offer. Whether you're looking for wheeled luggage or a carry on bag, there's a good selection to choose from.

The companies that spring to mind are Jeep, Outdoor Gear, Antler, Samsonite (if you want to go posh!) and Trunki – to name but a few.

In fact Trunki do a great range in kids cabin luggage and trust me, Trunki are funky when it comes to kids luggage!

Over and above buying the right size, make sure it's fit for purpose and meets your needs. And don't pay over the odds. Shop smart - shop around and check out online stores as well as high street ones.

There's some great bargains to be had, so make sure you look around before you buy.

Baggage Rules

Baggage rules do vary slightly, from carrier to carrier. The safest way of finding out the absolutes is to check with the carrier that you're planning to fly with.

They will always advise you of what's allowed, and what's not. A phone call or a quick check on their website is always advisable.

How much should you pay for cabin luggage? To be honest, you can pay as little as $45 for decent hand luggage but … you can pay a whole lot more. It depends on what you want – and what you want to pay.

In my opinion, if you’re not going to get much use of out your luggage, buy something that simply does the job.

If you’re based in Europe, then a company called Tripp spring to mind. They provide affordable cabin luggage in an assortment of colours/ weights.

If (like me) you need something that can stand a bit of hammer, then you’re better of paying a bit more. Not that I’m into Samsonite or Antler luggage – I don’t earn that kind of money!

However, both companies offer a fair range of hand luggage that, despite being a little expensive, will stand up to being flown from here to Hong Kong and back – several times a month!

Designer Cabin Luggage

Carry On Baggage Size

At the end of the day, when it comes to carry on baggage size and buying the appropriate luggage – consider what fits your needs.

You know the size (I already told you!) so decided on style – holdall, solid form/wheels etc, maybe even colour or overall style … plus price.

You can pay really silly money for your cabin luggage or, like me you can aim for something decent without breaking the bank …
