Signs Of Being Pregnant
91Swollen Breasts
As signs of being pregnant go, this in itself doesn't indicate pregnancy. Some women suffer from swollen/tender breasts during their menstrual cycle. However, if several other symptoms present at or around the same time, swollen breasts can be classed as an early pregnancy sign. The condition is caused by increased levels of hormones surging through your body, though it can settle down once the second trimester starts.
Fatigue/tiredness
For many women, fatigue can be one of the sure pregnancy signs. A sudden onset of tiredness for no apparent reason can be a strong indication that you’re pregnant. This, for me, was a big problem with my fourth pregnancy. Within a matter of weeks, I was persistently tired. Unfortunately this continued throughout my pregnancy but some women find that it dissipates as their pregnancy progresses.
Signs Of Being Pregnant
The signs of being pregnant will vary from woman to woman. Many women find themselves asking 'could I be pregnant?' simply because the early signs of pregnancy are many and tend to differ from woman to woman. No two women will exhibit the same pregnant symptoms and some can actually pass into the second trimester before any physical indicators present themselves. That said, most will have an inkling within a matter of weeks – usually, missing a period is one of the first signs.
However, unless your menstrual cycle is as regular as clockwork, it can sometimes be a little tricky trying to work out if you’re pregnant – unless of course you just go right ahead and take a pregnancy test.
Signs Of Being Pregnant
Missed Period
One of the more common and definitive pregnancy symptoms, especially for women that have been trying to become pregnant. However, it’s not an absolute – there are other reasons for a blip in our menstrual cycle so it’s advisable to take a pregnancy test. That said, if your cycle is rhythmic, and you’re in tune with your cycle, the possibility of pregnancy being the cause for a missed period is probably high.
Morning Sickness
A huge indicator of pregnancy. Often viewed as a ghastly side effect of being pregnant and for many women, this symptom can present almost immediately. Further, the sickness is not strictly related to mornings and is therefore quite misleading.
Some feel sick in the evenings, for others it can be a recurring wave throughout the day. Added to that, some only experience nausea, as opposed to vomiting. In any case, both can become extremely unpleasant.
Cravings
Although this is one of the more common signs of being pregnant, it’s not advisable to rely on this alone. This symptom is best measured alongside others symptoms, such as fatigue and swollen breasts (for e.g.). Also, cravings don’t always present during the first few weeks. I had cravings with each one of my pregnancies but only one of them started within a few days of being pregnant.
Urinating Frequently
Again, not a sign of being pregnant in itself but if you’re also suffering nausea and fatigue for example, this could be another precursor. In part it’s caused by progesterone, a pregnancy hormone, stimulating the bladder and partly it’s due to the increased pressure that your bladder suffers as your pregnancy progresses. For some, this symptom can present within a matter of weeks.
Pregnancy Test
Without doubt the quickest and simplest way to determine whether or not you're pregnant is to use the best pregnancy test kit - which is (by far) the First Response kit. It's fast, accurate and comes with enough strips to test three times. Almost 100% - a great indicator for home pregnancy tests - and a sure sign you then need to book an appointment with your doctor.
It's very simple to use and easy to understand - the test is done by reading the HCG levels in your urine. The cost of the kit is likely to be be the best 10 to 15 bucks you've spent in a long while - there's no better way of confirming the signs of being pregnant. Don't forget - check-in with your doctor at the soonest if your results are positive!
Best Early Pregnancy Book
Your Pregnancy
There are various other signs of being pregnant, though less common, and they're all detailed in the book Your Pregnancy MD: The First Trimester. It's an awsome book and lists thing such as:
- Changes in taste/smell
- Appetite increase
- Appetite decrease
- Feeling lightheaded
- Backaches
- Headaches
- Constipation
- Emotional/ mood swings
If you do believe you may be pregnant, or you’re unsure, read up on what an obstetrician has to say. The book is very highly rated and popular, plus it takes you from the very start of your pregnancy right through the first trimester. For ten bucks you're getting all you'll need to know, straight from the hroses mouth.
Pregnancy Signs
Signs Of Being Pregnant - Rounded Up
In short, the more common early symptoms of pregnancy rounded up are:
- Cravings
- Fatigue
- Swollen breasts
- Missed period
- Morning sickness
- Frequent urination
As stated previously, if one, all or several of the above symptoms of pregnancy do present – there’s a chance you may be pregnant. However, our bodies aren’t an exact science (unfortunately!) so don’t simply read the list and think “I’m pregnant”.
They’re only indicators, possibly pointing towards pregnancy. So hold the ‘phone calls until you know for sure!

Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy
It’s important that you care of yourself - and your health and wellbeing - as being pregnant is a wonderful experience. It’s also far more enjoyable when you have an understanding of what to expect, as well as the correct support. So, if you are pregnant - or you're presenting with some signs of being pregnant - a recommended book is the Mayo Clinic Guide.
It's a superb book - the one that most women reach for when they discover they're pregnant. It's packed with relevant information, nothing's left out and it's like almost a pregnancy bible. It's also a great investment as there's nothing quite like knowledge - especially when it's readily available. Reading it allows you to inform and consequently arm yourself with the knowledge of what's to come, which is better for you and - better for baby. Good luck for the next nine months ... you've a wonderful journey ahead!

=o so you are female after all! I think that it is a wonderful ideal that you did a series of mommie-to-be Hubs. I seen every one, voted em' up! Awesome, very well done.
What a gorgeous looking hub. Absolutely, and sound advice. Love this.
great hub, and very informative, those were the days..... tubes are tied, weeeeeeeeeeeeee.

this is so helpful when i wa pregnant i had all the symptoms and i had cravngs even before my missed period and my brests got really tender
When I was pregnant with Isaac, I was sure the day I was due. Being a day or two late wouldn't normally be an issue for me, it happens quite a lot. But I just felt completely different (isn't that a helpful way of putting it?)
After a couple of pregnancies already, my mother says she knew she was pregnant the third and fourth time even before she was overdue.
Morning sickness - I spit on the name. I was sick all day, every day, from week 6 to the end of labour.
i am nervous as ever. im 16 and am having a baby. any advise on how to tell my mom???
Great stuff!
I threw up in court, once. Which is a handy benchmark when things are going badly in a case, "is this as bad as being sick in Stratford Magistrates' Court?" The answer, fortunately, has always been, "no".
I knew I was pregnant when I could smell salt from across the room. Well, that and the non stop vomiting....this was a really good hub, and it reminded me of how sepcial it is to be pregnant, that magical feeling of "whats my baby gonna look like?" and at the same time I am sooooo thankful those days are long gone!!!! :)
The nausea did it for me. About 2 weeks before my first pregnancy was confirmed I began waking up nightly at about 1:00am feeling somewhat ill. Little did I know that this was just the beginning :-) Unfortunalely, I was the 1 out of 200 (statistically speaking) women that developed hyperemesis gravidarum - morning sickness/standard nausea can't hold a candle to this! The taste/smell thing also took alot out of me. Ahh - the joys of pregnancy. With my second pregnancy, it was worse. In the end - it was all worth it. But now that I have my boy and girl, i don't think I'll be going through that again :-)
Brilliantly written FG. Its a must read not only for women, but also for men, as it is imp for us also to knw what our love is going through. Cheers
Great hub,it is information everyone must know.
would you consider cramping a symptom to detect pregnancy?
I haven´t had kids so far and your article looks great, it keeps you far away from becoming anxious about being pregnant or not. Unfortunately I cannot add anything from my direct experience. However I wrote an article which could be really interesting for pregnant women. If you want you can read it and tell me what you think. ;-)
Always good to have a few extra waring signs, so i know to take all the overtime I can get. Great article.
Very good article and well written. Good for guys too because they can use it as a reference to check out and determine the early symptoms of their wives..
Great hub. And I really love your pictures, especially the first one, lol!
u are so funny frog
REally good hub. The added pictures were a great touch. I have just come across your hubs today and I think they are great.
That was a really unusual and informative hub. I loved being pregnant just not so keen on the 'labour' part. You really do come up with some great hubs. Thank you.
Gosh Frogdropping, I have learnt so much from your blog! I am new to Hub Pages and just started my diary trying to find my Moms. I am an unfertilized egg down in a Moms oavary who has just been picked as the 'chosen egg' and on my way down to the 'tunnel of love' to get fertilized hoepfully by the Sperm army! Do you have any advice?
Yours Eggy.

Hey FG - very well written!
Actually, I thought that changes in smell/taste were one of the more common symptoms as many of the women I know including myself- have had various changes in taste/smell even before the missed period. Don't know if there have ever been any studies done...just anecdotal evidence on my part.
